Dear Presby Family: Marriage: A Reflection of Christ & the Church

“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.” Ephesians 5:25

In many North American weddings, the moment a bride begins her walk down the aisle is pivotal. Everyone stands to join the groom in watching her as she processes to meet him. Of course, that moment is important for the groom as well because he loves his bride and longs to have her with him. As they meet and join hands, it symbolizes the beginning of their new life together, which they pledge to continue throughout their lives.

But did you know that this is a picture of Christ and the church? Jesus loves his bride, humbled and submitted himself, and gave himself up for her. As such, our marriages should show the world what covenant love and faithfulness look like. It isn’t just a human institution; it’s a divine reflection. It’s a platform for the Gospel. And it’s an opportunity to show the world who Jesus is and how He loves His bride.

Is that the story your marriage tells?

This week we are starting a new sermon series called “I Still Do.” The hope is to look at issues and challenges surrounding marriage and family, and to give you the tools necessary to thrive. We hope you use it as an opportunity to grow personally, and we also hope that it is something you’d be willing to invite others to hear.

This week, we’re starting with a simple question: What is the story told by your marriage?
