The Worship Design Team is still working through the Psalms during our weekly meetings. This week we read Psalm 91.
At first glance, this Psalm seems to indicate that if you believe and trust in God, then nothing bad will happen to you. But as we dug deeper, we realized that there really is no promise of complete ease and comfort for the Christian.
Verses 9 & 10 say:
9 ”If you say, 'The Lord is my refuge,' and you make the Most High your dwelling,
10 no harm will overtake you, no disaster will come near your tent.”
We noticed it doesn’t say, “No harm will come to you.” But it says that no harm will overtake you.
Verses 14 & 15 say:
14 "Because he loves me,” says the Lord, “I will rescue him;
I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name.
15 He will call on me, and I will answer him. I will be with him in trouble….”
Again, we wouldn’t need rescuing or protection if nothing bad or scary happened. But God says that he will be with us in trouble.
I hope this is encouraging to you as you go through your days. Sometimes we question whether God loves us because bad things are happening. But God doesn’t promise a pain-free life. He does promise to walk with us through that pain.
