Dear Presby Family: Our Deepest Root

The world in which we live is either the sphere of our control or the sphere of our accountability. The core of our life is either filled with time and chance as expressed by our soul-less existence or the core of our life is occupied by the creator God who revealed himself, who gave us choices though we fell. That is the sphere and the core, now for the outer edge.

At the end or edge of our lives is a future marked by either a destiny of despair and nothingness or by an eternity of hope and forgiveness in Christ. These stark options have been explored and explained by Western thinkers and the Bible for millennia. However, we tend to ignore them because daily life can be lived as a middle option where we do not really have to choose between hope and despair, between a creator and none, or between autonomy and accountability. We can be nice and get by nicely. We think.

When difficult times, hard choices, or deep loss come our way, we go deep into our souls to cope, and there we find out what our deepest roots really are.

Do we trust the Lord or our resources and families? Do we rely on God's ways or on our wits?
