“Honor your father and mother”— which is the first commandment with a promise —“so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” - Ephesians 1:2-3
For whom do you think this was written? Was Paul writing to young children in their parents’ home? Was it written to teenagers? Was it written to adults/parents? Keep in mind that the culture in Israel often had 3 or more generations of people living together.
While we often want to apply this to young children, the reality is that this is a good reminder for those of us who are older to ask, “How am I treating my elders, especially my parents?” Do we berate? Complain? Act negatively toward? And most importantly, how are we setting an example for the young people in our lives?
There is little doubt that our best and our worst behavior comes out in our families, which is why we need this reminder. We need to act honorably and show honor to those who have gone before us if we are to expect our children to honor us. How do we do that? Especially if our parents weren’t that honorable? I look forward to seeing you on Sunday and unpacking it together in person or online.
Grace & Peace,
Pastor Aaron
